The College Board

About the Board

The College is a company under the Corporations Act 2001 not having share capital (not-for-profit). It is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors who are appointed at the Annual General Meeting. The AGM is generally held on the third Wednesday in June. The Constitution of Sydney Community College Limited outlines our operating limits.

Board Members

Dr Roger Morris, AM, Chairperson.


Dr Roger Morris was, until he retired, an Associate Professor in Adult Education at the University of Technology, Sydney and he continues his relationship with the University as an Honorary Associate. Roger, the longtime National Secretary of Adult Learning Australia, is active in a range of other community organisations. He is the President of both the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts and the Association of Mechanics’ Institutes and Schools of Arts in NSW. Roger is the Vice President of the NSW Council on the Ageing (COTA-N) and a member of the National COTA Policy Council. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of Meals on Wheels (NSW). In 2006, Roger was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame. Roger was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the 2008 Australia Day Honours for services to Adult Continuing and Community Education.

Jana Stone, Board Member.


Jana Stone has over 25 years career experience over a broad range of private and public sector industry areas specializing in the last 14 years in services marketing. She has a Bachelor of Arts and Graduate Diploma of Education from the University of Sydney and gained a Master of Business Administration in 1990 over 4 years part time from UTS specialising in Strategic and International Marketing. She led the School of Business and Administrative Studies at Sydney Technical College from 1987 to 1991, was the inaugural Marketing Manager for NSW Government School Education in 1992/93 and was Director, Business Development at Sydney Institute of Technology covering both national and international commercial operations from 1994 to 2000. Her consultancy, Lotus Learning International, has specialized in services marketing consultancy particularly between Australia and China. Jana is also an adjunct lecturer at UTS, Graduate School of Business and at James Cook University specializing in Organisational Behavior, Strategic Marketing/Management and International Business. Jana has also lived and worked in China, New Zealand and Greece.

Garry Traynor, Principal.

Garry Traynor is the Foundation Principal of the College. He is also the Public Officer of the College. Garry has had a distinguished career in Community and Adult Education spanning some 26 years. He is a Past President of Adult Learning Australia, and served as President for three years. Garry is also a long serving member of the NSW TAFE Accreditation Council, was a foundation member of the TAFE Sydney Institute Advisory Board and a member of the Innovation Business Skills Council Australia (IBSA) Education Advisory Committee.

Ellen McLoughlin, Board Member.


Ellen McLoughlin is a Community Representative on the Sydney Community College Board and was previously an employee of the College for 10 years where she made a significant contribution to the college’s early development. Ellen left the college pursue an Arts Degree at the University of Sydney and a variety of commitments in the community. Ellen has extensive links within the inner-city community and strong interests in social justice and the environment.

Colleen Harris, Board Member.


Colleen Harris: BA Sc (OT); M.Ed (Adult), is the Director of ErgoFit and since 1998 has been consulting extensively to private and public sector clients in the areas of occupational health and safety, risk management, workplace injury management, integrated claims management and workplace training and assessment. Prior to founding ErgoFit Colleen was responsible for establishing the WorkCover Inspector Training Unit and developing and implementing a nationally recognised competency based OHS qualification for WorkCover Inspectors. Following this achievement Colleen was invited to take on the challenge of establishing the WorkCover Information Centre and a databank of frequently asked OH&S and workers compensation questions and answers. Colleen has an extensive network of professional OH&S and educational resources and colleagues at hand that can be tapped into as the need arises. She is recognised for her expertise in adult education, training, occupational health and safety, workers compensation and injury management.

Dr Tony Brown, Board Member.


Tony Brown is a lecturer in adult education at UTS. Prior to that Tony was the Director of Adult Learning Australia (ALA) and has also worked in senior policy roles in ACE and VET for the NSW Department of Education and Training.

Marguerite Young, Board Member


Marguerite has tutored at the college for nearly three years. As a result of her motto, “If I can do it anyone can!”, she has taught classes in triathlon, cryptic crosswords, internet dating and life coaching. She has a Science Degree and a MA from UTS Faculty of Business. Last year she developed over 30 new sport and recreation courses for the college and co-delivered the Redfern/Waterloo Precinct Leaders Workshops. She currently works as a consultant for AusAID and the International Fund for Animal Welfare which she, forever the student, fits in between College courses.

Jane Sampson, Board Member.


Jane has recently retired from teaching in the Faculty of Education at UTS, having spent the last twenty years working with the professional development of adult educators. She was Director of the Bachelor of Education in Adult Education for several years, and for many years coordinated the Community strand of the Bachelor of Education in Adult Education and the Graduate Certificate of Community Education.

Jane began working with adult learners in the 1970s in the training and development field. From 1978 to 1981 she joined the then NSW Board of Adult Education, a time of considerable growth and development in community adult education.

During the 1980s Jane operated as a consultant working in areas of training and development with non-profit organisations as well as with industry, government and business organisations. She is currently working with Saunders and Associates, a consultancy service in non-profit governance and development.
