Relief (Block) Printing Essentials
If you want to learn Relief Block Printing in Sydney, then this course is for you.
Relief printing is one of the oldest methods of printing. In this course learn about the history of relief block printing and learn how to print lino and wood block prints, by hand, on paper. Create beautiful artworks with this ancient craft.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
- Brief history of relief printing
- Cutting and hand printing a lino and wood block.
- Discussion on paper choices
- Use and maintenance of cutting tools and safety issues
- Discussion about storing and displaying prints on paper
Objectives
The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
By the end of the course, students will:
- Have an appreciation of the history of relief printing
- Be able to identify prints made from relief blocks
- Have obtained skills in cutting a lino block and wood block plate
- Understand the use and maintenance of carving and printing tools
- Have an appreciation of the choice of papers for printing
- Have printed a one-colour print
- Have been introduced to how to achieve a multi colour print using multiple blocks or reduction methods
- Have discussed storage, archiving and displaying prints
Other Information
No previous printing experience necessary.
All basic equipment and supplies will be supplied by the college.
Students may like to supply their own specialist printing papers and coloured ink depending on their individual project, this will be discussed in class.
This is a practical course, strength and dexterity are required.
Students should bring an apron or smock to protect clothing.
Design & Technology Ctr, cnr Gordon St & Victoria Rd, Rozelle. If driving, no left turn into Gordon St, so turn left into Lilyfield Rd, then first right into Gordon St.
Please wear closed in shoes.
