Woodwork for Beginners

If you want to learn Woodwork in Sydney then this course of 8 classes is for you.

Learn about wood theory, jointing methods, handtools and selected electric tools as you complete a suitable individual project under the supervision of a qualified tutor. Materials approx. $30

Discover the exciting and creative world of woodwork in this beginners course. Learn how to use hand tools, and selected electric tools. The course will start with wood theory and jointing methods and then participants will undertake individual projects, under the supervision of a qualified tutor. Examples of popular projects include boxes, racks, stools, trays and quartz clocks.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Practising safety in the workshop.
  • Identifying and using woodworking tools.
  • Identifying and using selected electric machines.
  • Understanding basic information on timber properties and types.
  • Using connectors, e.g. glue, nails, screws and dowels: making practise joints.
  • Working on own project with teacher guidance (approx. 4 weeks)

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will have:

  • Learned how to use woodworking tools safely
  • Learned to identify and use selected electric machines.
  • Learned some woodworking techniques and practices.
  • Learned skills in planning, reading plans, developing a cutting list and purchasing suitable material.
  • Made at least one wooden object.

Other Information

  • Please bring a sharp pencil and paper to the first class.
  • Enclosed leather shoes are required in the workshop and an apron are recommended. Long hair must be worn up.
  • Bring a drawing or use plans supplied of a very simple project.
  • No MDF allowed in woodwork classes due to OH&S reasons.
  • Cost of materials is approximately $30

Leichhardt Campus, Sydney Secondary College (formerly Leichhardt High School) is located on the corner of Balmain Road and Moore Street West. Entry via Derbyshire Street. Onsite parking very limited, some street parking available. (click on venue below for directions)
