African Drumming

If you want to learn African Drumming in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Pape, the head drummer from a fishing village in Senegal, West Africa, will share with you not only the African rhythms, but also the culture that is his heritage. You will learn how to play the djembe, and also experience the sounds of the talking drum and the sabar. Your own djembe is required.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Learn the different notes and practice
  • Theory and practice playing a rhythm
  • Practice playing a rhythm, playing a solo and theory

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will have:

  • Learned how to play their drum separately or with a group

Other Information

Students are required to bring their own djembe drum. Some suggestions for where to purchase a djembe are:

  • African Nomad, Unit 2–2A 75 Mary Street, St Peters
  • Glebe Markets on a Saturday
  • Billy Hydes
  • Optimum Percussion, Burwood

This course is taught in the Griot ‘oral’ tradition with no notes so if you want a record to practice out of class please bring a tape recorder.

College Office is located on the cnr Balmain Road and Perry Street, Leichhardt. (Within the grounds of the Orange Grove Public School.) Parking available. Enter on Perry Street. The school hall is in the large brown brick building in the centre of the playground. (click on venue below for directions)
