Photography Essentials

If you want to learn about photography in Sydney, then this course of 7 classes is for you.

A course for beginners. Learn to use camera functions such as shutter and aperture, how to choose the right film for the job and use accessories such as flash, light meter and filters. You need an SLR with manual option and will need to cover the cost of 6 to 8 rolls of film and processing in addition to the course fee. This course is also appropriate for digital SLR cameras. Photo shoots will take place as part of the course.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Appreciation of the medium of photography.
  • Learning about the camera and how it works, including how the image gets on the film; basic camera and film care.
  • Learning about exposure, including “f” stops; film speed; aperture and shutter as exposure controls; exposure readings; exposure problems and processing inconsistencies.
  • Learning about the effects caused by aperture and depth of field; shutter speed and freezing or slowing action.
  • Practising photographic skills including – the use of viewpoint, framing, use of light, lens choice, contrast, waiting for the right moment.
  • Using light and changing it – the effect on the photograph of different types of light – available light and flash on camera.
  • Learning about and using different film types and filters, including colour negative, slide film and black and white.
  • Evaluating photographs

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will have:

  • Identified the basic features of a 35mm camera.
  • Used a 35mm camera, including loading the film and setting film speed, to achieve a desired purpose.
  • Identified common exposure problems.
  • Practised basic exposure techniques to achieve specific photographic purposes, including minimum or maximum depth of field and freezing or slowing action.
  • Identified types of natural and artificial light and used it to achieve desired purpose.
  • Practised photographic composition skills to construct better photographs.
  • Learned about film types, filters and film speeds used for specific purposes.
  • Learned about the breadth of photographic application.
  • Increased confidence in handling their camera.

Other Information

Please bring your camera to class with the user manual if you have one. Film and processing of 6 – 8 films could cost up to $100. Photo shoots will be held during class time with two weekend shoot.

NB: Digital cameras are indeed suitable for this class.
