Fundamentals of Painting
If you want to learn about painting in Sydney, then this course is for you.
Taking an exploratory approach of the elements of art through mixed media, this painting course focuses on playing with a range of mediums such as gouache, acrylics, oil paints, use of pastels, charcoal and collage (all optional). This course is open for beginners to more experienced students. As we progress through the course, students will embark on their own project, or be guided into one by the course tutor.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
- The use of viewfinders to focus as we explore composition play with different mediums in a work
- Focus on elements of art as the course progresses, such as colour, line, shape and pattern
- Look at various artworks, and the way they relate to technique, style etc
- Mixing of colours, understanding cool and warm colour schemes and high and low key tonal range

Objectives
The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
By the end of the course the student will have:
- Started to think about a style
- Explored different techniques
- An understanding of composition
- Knowledge of mixing mediums together, using any chosen medium – acrylic, oil or gouache on canvas, board or paper
- An understanding of tone
- Learned about colour – ability to perceive cool and warm colours and recognise opaque and semi-transparent pigments and their uses
Other Information
Please bring:
- Sketchbook (A4 or A3)
- Willow charcoal
- Pencil (4B or higher)
- Eraser and sharpener
- Ink
- Round brushes – Sizes 1, 3 and 6
- Suggested colours for whatever medium one chooses are: veridian green, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, white, vermillion red, alizeron crimson, raw sienna, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue
In the first lesson you will be preparing for a large close-up portrait (self-portrait). Please bring to lesson one:
- A small mirror to clip to easel with large bulldog clip
- Paper – A3 or larger (sketch)
- Large canvas/canvas board/canvas paper
We will discuss paints, mediums, paper and canvas frames to buy in the first week such as gouache and acrylics.
Design & Technology Ctr, cnr Gordon St & Victoria Rd, Rozelle. If driving, no left turn into Gordon St, so turn left into Lilyfield Rd, then first right into Gordon St.
Please wear closed in shoes.
