If you want to learn English Grammar in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Have you ever wondered about the difference between who and whom, or its and it’s? Did you miss out on learning grammar at school? Using correct grammar is a vital part of writing professional and effective documents, yet for many people it remains a mystery. This very practical course will teach you how to use different parts of speech and punctuation correctly.

The sessions involve numerous group activities designed to apply and practise the concepts taught. Students also bring their own queries to the class. This course is designed for fluent speakers of English.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

• Parts of Speech
• Verbs
• Sentence construction: clauses and phrases
• Punctuation

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Identify parts of speech (verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions) and use them appropriately within sentences
• Identify finite and non-finite verbs, tenses, conditional constructions and voice (active/passive)
• Identify clauses and phrases, and correct some popular writing errors relating to these
• Correctly use apostrophes and other punctuation marks (such as commas, semi-colons) and identify where these are used incorrectly

Other Information

Students are not expected to have any prior knowledge. They will need to bring a pen and some paper. Handouts will be given, to supplement the information in the course.

Leichhardt Campus, Sydney Secondary College (formerly Leichhardt High School) is located on the corner of Balmain Road and Moore Street West. Entry via Derbyshire Street. Onsite parking very limited, some street parking available. (click on venue below for directions)
