Podcast Power!

Ever dreamed of being your own media mogul? It is easy with a podcast. A podcast is like a radio program. It is a downloadable audio file that you can create on your home computer and can include music, voice-overs, interviews and sound effects. You will find podcasts on every imaginable topic – from science fiction to marketing.

This course will teach you the basics of using podcasts to broadcast your ideas to the world.

This online course is conducted as eight sessions of one hour in a virtual conference room with individual activites and text-chat between sessions. Full details on how to access the conference room will be provided one week before the course begins.

Agenda

During this online course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
Day 1:

  • Orientation

Day 2:

  • What is podcasting?
  • Describe the basic concepts of podcasting.
  • Locate and listen to a podcast.

Day 3:

  • Really Simple Syndication
  • Briefly describe RSS and its uses.
  • Locate and subscribe to an RSS feed

Day 4:

  • iTunes and podsafe music 1
  • Define podsafe music.
  • Demonstrate the 3 ways to manage music using iTunes.

Day 5:

  • iTunes and podsafe music 2
  • Define podsafe music.
  • Demonstrate the use of a podsafe music site.

Day 6:

  • Podcasting Tools 1
  • List five tools used to create podcasts.
  • Create a basic voice recording with Audacity.

Day 7:

  • Podcasting Tools 2
  • List five tools used to create podcasts.
  • Upload a recording to Podshow.

Day 8:

  • Promoting Your Podcast
  • Develop three strategies to promote your podcast to others.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
By the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Define what a podcast is
  • List the major pieces of equipment and software required to produce a podcast
  • Write, record and edit a short podcast script
  • Describe two different options for publishing a podcast online

Other Information

  • A moderate level of computer literacy is assumed.
  • Participants are encouraged to listen to podcast examples at sites such as http://www.abc.net.au/rn/podcast/default.htm
  • Participants will also need to come to class with an idea for a one minute podcast script.

This online course is conducted as eight sessions of one hour in a virtual conference room with individual activites and text-chat between sessions. Partipants will be online in the conference room between 7.00pm and 8.00pm each week. Text chat is asynchronous and you can participate in this part of the course at a time convenient for you.

Details on how to access the online conference room will be forwarded to you one week before the course.

Students will need to purchase a headset which includes a microphone to participate in this course. You can expect to pay approximately $20 for a headset from Officeworks. A broadband connection is preferable but not essential.
