Import/Export - An Overview of the Basics
If you want to learn import/export basics in Sydney, then this course of 2 classes is for you.
This is a practical overview of the business of international trade that you can put to immediate use. Topics include: where to start and get help, terminology, banking procedures, documentation, commercial, insurance, government and destination requirements, air freight, forwarding agents, customs brokers, duties, sales tax, GST and more. For people starting their import/export business, extending their current business activities or wanting to broaden their knowledge.
Lance Scoular has been involved in import/export for more than 35 years. Early in his career he worked for multinational manufacturer/traders 3M Australia and Baxter Healthcare. Later he started and developed his own customs and forwarding brokerage. He also has had directorship with global transport and international marketing companies.
Lance is co-author of the book ‘Exporters and Importers – Survive and Prosper’.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
Day 1:
- Introduction and Overview
- INTERCOMS 2000- Negotiation Terms between Buyer and Seller- Who pays for what?
- Methods of payment – How does the Exporter get paid? How does the Importer pay?
- Documentation: Commercial, Transport, Financial, Government
Day 2:
- Methods of transport
- Export process
- Import process
- Customs and quarantine procedures
- Marine insurance
- Import duties
- Classification of goods for imports and exports
- GST for imports and exports
- Tips for doing more
Objectives
By the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Plan their import/export transaction, processes and procedures and identify the areas where they can seek assistance
- Minimise the risk of costly error in the import and export process
- Maximise their potential for success in international trade
