Behind the Ballot Box
In the lead up to the 2008 Local Government Elections this course will provide an overview of elections and the voting systems that are used by Australia’s three levels of government and also in other countries. Visit the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers of the NSW Parliament, take part in a voting simulation and explore the role of parliament and elected representatives in Australian democracy.
Graham Spindler, Manager, Parliamentary Education Section and Daniela Giorgi, Education Officer, Parliamentary Education Section. Both Graham and Daniela have Education backgrounds and have worked as Secondary History / English teachers in the public school system in NSW and for the NSW Department of Education and Training. The Parliamentary Education Section implements programs and creates resources intended to increase knowledge and understanding of the role and functions of the parliament and supports the development of civic skills necessary for active citizenship.
Agenda
1.Introduction to the role of parliament and elected representatives in Australian democracy.
2.Develop an understanding of our system of government and visit the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council Chambers.
3.Explore electoral processes and voting methods for local government, state and federal elections.
Objectives
By the end of the course participants will have had the opportunity to: *Visit the Parliament of NSW and consider how we are governed. *Develop an understanding of state and federal electoral processes and voting systems.
Other Information
Parliament House is in Macquarie Street, almost opposite Martin Place. Public transport is recommended as parking at the Parliament is not available. The nearest train stations are Martin Place and St James. Participants should enter Parliament via the Macquarie Street entrance and make their way to the Legislative Assembly reception desk.
