Obento refers to portable lunch dishes. People often bring lunch boxes on a trip, or when they do hiking or driving. One of the appeals of these rice-plus meals is that they gratify the Japanese desire to have all the food at the same time. There are no courses in the Japanese home-style meal; it is all there, in front of you. You will enjoy making rice balls and other tasty dishes.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

• Introduction to very basic typical Japanese ingredients.
• Demonstration of how to cook the Japanese rice.
• Demonstration and Practicing of rice ball, egg roll, flavorful Japanese fried chicken, and other tasty dishes.
• Explanation of correct dining etiquette will be made covering a range of situations from casual to fine dining.

Objectives

By the end of the course the student will:

• Understand Japanese basic ingredients
• learn how to make rice balls, egg rolls, flavorful Japanese fried chicken
• Have learnt correct dining etiquette
• Have learnt how to make and present Japanese Obento

Other Information

Please bring a sharp knife, chopsticks, apron, 2 tea towels & a container for any left over food. People with long hair need to have it tied up. Please bring pen & paper.

Leichhardt Campus, Sydney Secondary College (formerly Leichhardt High School) is located on the corner of Balmain Road and Moore Street West. Entry via Derbyshire Street. Onsite parking very limited, some street parking available. (click on venue below for directions)
