Leadlight For Beginners

If you want to learn Leadlight in Sydney then this course of 7 classes is for you.

Learn how to design and create a beautiful leadlight window. Professional tutors cover the traditional methods of glass cutting and leading in a friendly environment. Expect to complete a small panel of your own design. Course notes are provided, tools will cost approximately $80, glass and lead costs vary according to the size of the window you wish to make. Please provide your own safety glasses and wear enclosed shoes.

For beginners you will be escorted through all the skills required to complete your first window, including design, glass cutting, leading, soldering etc. Expect to complete a leadlight panel of your own design to be installed in your home.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Learning about the tools and equipment used to make leadlight items including safety issues.
  • Designing and drawing the picture to be represented (cartoon).
  • Learning to cut glass and assembly of the panel with lead.
  • Learning the techniques of soldering, puttying, whiting and finishing polish.
  • Completing a leadlight panel of your own design choice.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will have:

  • Designed and created a leadlight window panel.
  • Learned traditional techniques of leadlighting.

Other Information

The First Night

  • The first night is quite hectic with lots of new information.
  • We will talk about the tools you need and where you can buy those from (cost approx $80).
  • We will also talk about the glass, the types and colours and how easy or hard they are to cut (glass $50–150, it’s your choice).
  • We discuss how to come up with a design and how to draw your pattern (lots of cheats are available if you’re not yet a confident drawer).
  • We then talk about measuring up your window frame.

Please bring safety glasses & wear enclosed shoes on the first night and rest of the term. Tools & equipment as well as glass cutting will be discussed and practiced on the first night. Please feel free to contact the tutor Vicki Slattery on 0419 337326.

  • Having a vehicle, or access to one, is a distinct advantage particularly for weeks 4 – 8.

Leichhardt Campus, Sydney Secondary College (formerly Leichhardt High School) is located on the corner of Balmain Road and Moore Street West. Entry via Derbyshire Street. Onsite parking very limited, some street parking available. (click on venue below for directions)
