If you are interested in Dragon Boat racing in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Combining athleticism with ancient traditions, dragon boat racing is a great way to get fit while working in a friendly, team environment. Led by the 2006 National Champions, these introductory sessions will teach you the basics of the sport as you paddle around scenic Blackwattle bay and surrounding areas. Discover why dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia.

Dragon boating originated out of the turmoil of China in the 4th century BC. Qu Yuan, a poet and statesman, threw himself into the river in protest against corruption. Fishermen raced in their boats to save him but all was in vain. To commemorate this event, boats adorned in decorative dragon heads and tails raced in his honour.

From its beginnings as a traditional Chinese festival, dragon boat racing has become one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

Session One:

• Introduction to Dragon Boating, including a risk assessment and induction session, safety drills, basic technique drills (both on and off the water), timing and rhythm aspects of dragonboating (session will consist of 1 hour land-based and 1 hour water-based).

Session Two:

• Reiterate what was learned the previous week with a focus on timing, rhythm and technique.

Session Three:

• The paddlers should now be familiar with the basic aspects of dragon boating. In this session we introduce speed to the stroke whilst still emphasising power and technique.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course, students will have:

• A basic technique of Dragon Boating
• Intermediate techniques of Dragon Boating
• Developed a sense of teamwork
• Learned cultural aspects of dragon boating

Other Information

The meeting point will be under the Pyrmont side pylon of Anzac Bridge. Access via bank Street. Students are advised to plan to be there early. Directions are travel along Bank Street past the entry to the Fish Markets (on your left) for another 250 to 300 metres. You will then be at the meeting point. You should move inside the car park gates and ask for course tutor Peter Yates or Mavericks Dragon Boating. Peter will have his mobile on him until they get out on the water (0414 267 319), if you can’t find the meeting point. Alternatively, Michael can be contacted on 0439 994 509.

• Students need to be able to swim at least 50m to be able to undertake course

Students to bring:

• Water bottle
• Towel
• Change of clothes
• Thongs or shoes must be worn (non-marking shoes must be worn)
