Do you have a passion for cinema, for films, movies and everything from art-house to blockbuster? This series of informal but guided meetings is for film lovers and those keen to engage in stimulating discussion and exchange of opinion with a diverse group. Look at the latest DVDs available, check out the festivals, look at what commercial cinema has on offer and examine the classics.
If you want to learn about movies in Sydney, then this course is for you.
Participants meet every week to discuss must-see contemporary movies and those of the past century. Watch key scenes and moments from a widely varying selection of movies made in the past century, keep a keen eye on what’s coming and what’s worth seeing. Discuss a current-release film and explore the trends in cinema. The club is evolving to the needs and tastes of those who attend. It is advisable you get in early to avoid disappointment.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
At the beginning of each term, the club selects a group of topics to be covered. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, the club adapts to the needs and preferences of the class. The informal nature in which this course is conducted, is based on discussion.
- Look at work of directors such as – David Lynch, The Cohen Brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson, Alexander Payne, Pedro Almadovar, Steven Soderbergh, Terence Malick, Martin Scorsese, Lars Von Trier and back through the history of cinema into people like Bunuel, Fellini, Antonioni, Bergman, etc.
- Explore aspects of Asian and European cinema and the work of Middle Eastern filmmakers
- Examine Australian film, where it comes from and where it might be heading
- Look at classic works, the best and worst of cinema and defining moments
- Trace the history and meaning of an art and an industry, cinema and movie and influences that shape them
Objectives
The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
By the end of the course students will have:
- Developed a greater understanding of cinema, its styles, stories and genres
- Developed a greater appreciation of film technique and cinema narrative
- Strengthened their ability to articulate and communicate their personal responses to films
- Improved their communication skills through shared discussion with a diverse group of people who share a passion for films
- Learned about movies they might not otherwise have seen
- Learned about movies in a different light, analysing and critiquing the skills and disciplines that make them happen
- Had fun and want to come back for next term
