In this course we look at creating memorable scenes, developing character based and plot based stories, writing dialogue, creating marketable scripts, understanding genres as well as provide real time information about current opportunities, awards, competitions and resources to help your script idea make it to the big screen.
Incorporating loads of practical exercises and simple, tried and true screen writing techniques, Successful Scriptwriting offers something for advanced writers wanting to move into the film writing arena and new writers just starting to develop their work .

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Week one: Script Structure – why is a script not a novel? Looking at the essential elements of screenwriting including conflict, timing, development and plotting
  • Week two: Creating characters that actors will want to play – building story, conflict and interest through developing engaging protagonists, antagonists and supporting characters
  • Week three: Developing a scene breakdown – how to break a story into scenes
  • Week four: Subplots and additional storylines – how to build interest in your screenplay by providing additional, connected stories.
  • Week five: Bring your script to life – writing dialogue and description that will work visually.
  • Week Six : How to create concept documents and pitching ideas
  • Week Seven: Editing and rewriting – making the script bulet proof
  • Week Eight : Scriptwriter resource guide

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course, the student will:

  • Understand movie structures, genres and plotlines which will work for their idea
  • Know how to develop strong characters that work for a visual medium
  • Write and sequence scenes effectively
  • Understanding of the process of screenplay to theatre and how to make their script attractive to producers
  • Understand the importance of subtext and subplots
  • demonstrate understanding of how to develop script ideas and polish screenplays

The tutor will provide course notes. For further development of your script, the tutor will recommend a number of books to study and movies to examine.

Films that will be referred to throughout the course and are recommended viewing prior to course commencement are:
