Picture Framing Essentials

This two-day workshop will teach you how to make a picture frame and cut a window mount using entry-level framing equipment. It will also introduce you to more advanced methods of frame production, and will assist you in finding a mode of production best suited to your individual framing needs and situation.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

Students will be instructed in framing a small work on paper (drawing, photograph, certificate etc.) of their choice. The course schedule is as follows:

Day One:

  • Basic functions of a frame/why a picture is framed
  • Visualisation and design/planning and measuring up
  • Cutting and joining the frame
  • Glazing and backing board options

Day Two:

  • The matboard package/cutting a window mat
  • Hinging techniques and specialised tapes
  • Fitting up/assembling the frame
  • Framing suppliers

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will:

  • Be able to understand how and why a picture is framed
  • Have considered the basic principles of frame design
  • Be able to cut and join a frame to a required size
  • Be able to cut a window mat and hinge an artwork into a matboard package
  • Have gained a basic understanding of conservation framing materials and practices

Other Information

Students need to bring one work on paper to session one for framing (maximum paper size: 310×230mm).

Students should also bring a pencil, calculator and notepad. Course fee includes all frame materials including a choice of two mouldings, conservation alpha cellulose matboard, and foamboard backing.

NOTE: Glazing is not included in the course fee, and students should obtain and pay for a 2mm piece of glass between session one and two. Alternatively, a payment can be made to the course tutor to upgrade from glass to UV filtering acrylic (Perspex) and/or a polypropylene backing board. Course notes are included.
