Flamework Glass Bead Making

This course will give you the basic skills you will need to create your own beautiful glass beads. You will learn the ancient glass forming technique of flamework using a torch and Venetian glass. The course will cover many of the basic techniques from spinning a simple bead, shaping and decorative techniques such as gold and silver leaf. Course fee includes equipment and materials.

If you want to learn about creating your own glass beads with a flame in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Glass theory
  • Safety in the Studio
  • Bead making equipment and how to use it
  • Spinning a simple bead
  • Shaping techniques – cylinders, cubes, perfect round beads
  • Pulling stringers
  • Applying decoration – dots, stripes, layering, gold and silver leaf, wire, flowers, raking and feathering

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the students will:

  • Be familiar with the safety precautions that need to be adhered to in the bead-making studio
  • Be familiar with bead making equipment and how it is used in various applications
  • Be able to make basic beads using various techniques, beads will be of a good enough quality to then be used in jewellery application

Other Information

Please do not wear loose, flowy sleeves. Please wear closed in shoes.

Please bring:

  • A postpack tube at least 40 cm long
  • A pair of pliers, cheap ones are fine as long as they have teeth grips
  • A couple of cotton rags
  • A small container to take your beads home in
