Learn the basic techniques of flash on camera, bounced flash, manual use of speedlites and off camera flash in both daylight and night situations.

Modern Speedlites are a versatile and powerful tool that can expand your everyday photography. Speedlites offer the cheapest and most portable form of flash lighting available. They allow a photographer to achieve clean and publishable images in difficult lighting situations

A practical course designed for you to make the most of your go anywhere speedlite flash, taught by a working professional photographer.

The course gives a basic grounding in flash photography techniques for location work. It is essential training for all those wishing to get professional looking images. Covering the use of manual and ETTL flash, you will gain a clear understanding of how to create professionally lit photographs. You will learn how to make best use of your locations, to use the flash effectively in any setting and how to avoid typical flash mistakes.

This is an intermediate level course for students who already know how to use their Digital or Film SLR cameras manually and have a basic understanding of light and composition. This course will include 2 practical location shoots one of which will be a day time shoot to be negotiated with students

This course is not for Compact Digital Camera users (manual or automatic).

If you want to learn Flash Photography in Sydney, then this course is for you.

  • Creative Skills or equivalent and a
  • Film or Digital SLR Camera
  • Manual Speedlight Flash essential (not built in) with Manual

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Getting to know you speedlite. Basic controls and what they do
  • Basic on camera flash photography, why and when to use flash
  • Types of flash light, full flash and fill flash
  • Balancing flash light with daylight and other light sources
  • Use of bounce flash
  • Speedlites with hand held light meters
  • Colour temperature with flash and mixed lighting
  • Basic accessories for speedlites and their uses
  • When and how to use diffusers and reflectors
  • Shooting with more than one speedlite

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows:

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Use a professional flash on camera and off camera
  • Understand the basic principals of flash photography
  • Effectively use flash lighting for portraiture
  • Know how and when to effectively bounce or diffuse your flash
  • Avoid typical flash mistakes

Other Information

  • Please bring your camera to class with the user manual if you have one. Film and prints costs are not included in the price of the course. You will need to have a tripod and a manual Flash (not built in)
  • For the practical location shoots you will need to bring your own camera, lenses, batteries, tripods, flash and if you’re using a film camera, at least one roll of film. The safety and security of your equipment when on the street is your responsibility.
