Fabric Printing

In this hands-on course you will explore a variety of printing and colour application techniques and create your own fabulous designs on fabric. No previous design or printing experience required. Printing inks and most equipment supplied.

If you want to learn to hand print fabric in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Appreciate the many sources of designs – how to adapt them for printing and painting
  • Preparation and use of the screen
  • Multi-colour printing
  • Pattern repeats

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will:

  • Be able to adapt designs to make them suitable for printing
  • Have experienced screen-printing and relief printing
  • Have used various techniques to produce prints on fabrics
  • Have been able to explore experimental techniques for direct application of colour to fabric

Other Information

Please bring:

  • A small stencil-cutting knife
  • Drawing pad, pens, pencils etc for designing
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Small brushes
  • Sponge roller – 100 or 150mm wide
  • 50mm wide masking tape
  • Something to print on eg. a white T-Shirt or light coloured cotton fabric which has been washed
  • A few jars with lids for excess ink
  • An old rag for drying hands
  • Protective clothing
  • A couple of wire coat hangers
  • A cleaning sponge
  • Plastic spatulas (kitchen variety)
  • A hairdryer
