Keeping a Sketchbook

Anyone can learn to sketch. This course will take you out and about, sketching around central Sydney while you learn to fill your sketchbook with pages of drawings laid out in an appealing way. This course will arm you with the tools to overcome your inner critic. You will discover numerous secrets of experienced outdoor sketchers.
If you want to learn to sketch outside in Sydney, then this course is for you.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
The first week will be spent in the classroom, discussing materials and the principles of keeping a sketchbook ….. and sketching. The class may spend one more day in the classroom, depending on the needs of the students, however all the other lessons will be out sketching in places around central Sydney that are good to sketch. A wet weather plan will be in place for each day.

Objectives
The intended learning outcomes for this course are as follows:
By the end of the course, students will have:
- Formed the habit of regular drawing or sketching
- Conquered the inner critic
- Knowledge of methods to make sketchbook pages more appealing to the eye.
- An understanding of the use of the different acrylic mediums
- An understanding of page layout
- An understanding of colour theory.
- Knowledge of how to use tonal values to advantage
- An understanding of how perspective works.
Other information
Please bring to the first lesson:
- Pen
- Pencil (2B if you have)
- Rubber
- Pencil sharpener
- Sketchbook
- Coffee mug or cup to draw
- A muffin, scone, Danish pastry or bread roll to draw.
- Watercolour paints or watercolour pencils if you have. Do not purchase beforehand as materials will be discussed on the first day.
- Brush and water container.
Copic Multiliner Pen is recommended.
A5 size sketchbook is recommended, but if you prefer another size is fine.
Inexpensive sketchbooks and watercolour paints will be available for purchase from the tutor.
Subsequent lessons you will need
- Sunhat
- Sunscreen
- Bottle of water
- Folding stool or chair if you have one
Depending on the final choice of venues, and also on the weather, additional expenses may perhaps be incurred in museum entry fees, a ferry ride, and possibly a coffee in a coffee shop (to draw).
