Thai Level 2

Thailand is a country of many cultures, religions and dialects, and also one of the growing economies of our region.

If you want to learn Thai in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Expand your horizons, enrich your life and understand some of the cultures around you.

Extend your skills to a higher plane with a Level 2 course. Develop your fluency and conversation skills in a range of contexts, and build your vocabulary to levels which will allow you greater experience and appreciation of the culture and its people. This course assumes 30 hours of previous language study in Thai (for example through completing Level 1).

This course will focus on 4 basic skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and Thai culture.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that most of the following topics will be covered, however not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

Reading and Writing:

  • Introduction
  • Thai consonants, Thai vowels and tone
  • Making simple words
  • Rule of final consonants

Speaking and Listening:

  • Situations of speaking and listening
  • Thai particle: the words by themselves are meaningless but have feeling
  • Number and classifiers in every day life
  • Thai and its culture from sitcoms, music, movies and documentaries
  • Slang and new generation words and phrases

Note:

  • In each session there will be great emphasis given to pronunciation (in groups and pairs), which will enhance one’s fluency for communicating in Thai.
  • Additional resources may be used (eg. teacher’s own music, video etc.) where available and where suitable for the needs of the class.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of this course the students will:

  • Have learned how to read and write basic Thai words
  • Have learned how to read and write simple sentences
  • Have learned how to read and pronounce words and sentences correctly
  • Be able to speak more confidently with correct pronunciation and extended vocabulary – topic based conversations/discussions
  • Be able to use conversational skills to solve problems, ask questions, to participate in exchange of views according to the Thai etiquette
  • Have appreciated the Thai culture, geography and customs
  • Have become more familiar with a variety of resources and materials in the Thai language

Other Information

Please bring a notepad and pen. No textbook required, materials supplied.

To keep up with the class, students will need to allow a couple of hours a week to revise their lessons at home.
