Ikebana - Japanese Art of Flower Arrangement

If you want to learn Ikebana in Sydney then this course of 1 class is for you.

Basic Ikebana accords to simple rules and principles. This course is designed to teach techiniques and build an understanding of the ancient Japanese art- Ikebana which evokes the sensitive beauty of nature and the stunning style of formative art.
This course is conducted by a qualified Ikebana teachers. Course fee includes cost of consumables.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Introduction to Ikebana.
  • Explain and demonstrate Basic Style and Traditional Style

of arrangements which the students will learn and practice during the course.

  • Demonstrate by using the same flowers, stems and branches different styles and variations of arrangements.
  • Using the scissors – the correct way to trim branches, stems, leaves.
  • Bending of branches.
  • Selecting flowers, branches, stems for a particular arrangement.
  • Identifying the correct vase or base that can be used with a particular arrangement.
  • Using the Kenzan.
  • Learning how to keep arrangements fresh as long as possible.
  • Blending Ikebana to your surroundings or making it a focal point.
  • Identifying focal points of your arrangement and positioning it.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will have learnt:

  • economical flower arrangements using only 2 or 3 flowers
  • using their arrangements to enhance or blend into surroundings
  • that each flower has a face, function and relationship to another flower
  • the correct choice of a vase or base
  • that Ikebana can be seen in the same light as painting or sculpturing, where you are constantly fine tuning a single stem, like a painter or sculptor is fine-tuning a part of his painting or sculpture.

Other Material

Please bring:

  • a pencil
  • paper
  • secateur to cut branches
  • a small towel and a bucket

Container, Kenzan, flowers and Branches will be supplied by the tutors.
