Cloisonne Enamelling
If you want to learn Cloisonne Enamelling in Sydney then this course of 3 classes is for you.
This course explores the art of cloisonne enamelling, including how to anneal cloisonne wires, preparation of metal, bending wires into a design, washing and packing enamel and firing and grinding a finished enamel piece. Suitable for those who have completed at least Silver Jewellery for Beginners. Extra materials cost approx. $50.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
- What is enamel?
- Look at the various styles of enamel.
- Slide show of contemporary Australian and International Enamellers.
- Design cloisonne enamel piece.
- Make a piece of cloisonne enamel.
- How to: anneal cloisonne wires, prepare metal, bend wires into design, wash and pack enamel, use kiln, fire enamel in kiln, grind finished enamel piece, complete enamel piece.
- Depending on jewellery technical skills: either make into wearable piece or discuss how to set the enamel into a bezel setting.
Objectives
The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
By the end of the course the student will have:
- Designed and produced cloisonne enamel piece.
Other Information
Please bring the following to the first class.
- Fine Silver Sheet – 0.7mm (in the vicinity of 4cm by 5cm, depending on your project/s).
- Fine silver Cloisonne wire – 2m in length (the fine of the Cloisonne wires). (Tutor will supply).
- Fine pointed paintbrush – get a Roymac brand, size 00, with the red and white handle – fluffy, soft old brushes will not do!
- Small pair of straight nail scissors or similar (not curved).
- Round nosed pliers.
- Tissues.
- Small glass jar – short and wide is best.
- Small flat box or container.
- An egg ring.
- Clear contact paper – about A4 size will do.
- Paper/pencils/rubber etc for notes and designing.
You also need to bring around $50 to cover the cost of equipment for the workshop. Please bring a cup for tea or coffee.
