Chinese Brush Painting

If you want to learn about Chinese brush painting in Sydney, then this course is for you.

This course seeks to address the technical, spiritual and, at times, poetic nature of Chinese painting. Students will become adept at identifying the qualities of Chinese art that reflect a diversity of cultural values.

The Introduction to Chinese Painting promotes and introduces traditional aspects of Chinese Brush Painting. This program is specially designed for students, who may not have any painting experience, to develop Chinese painting skills. It helps students understand and use the different types of Chinese brush, colour and paper. Course fee includes ink, paper, colour and brushes valued at $50.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.Week Introduction

Week One – Introduction to Chinese Painting:

  • Introduce the function and characteristics of Chinese paint brushes, Chinese colour and the use of Chinese paper
  • The difference between western painting/drawing and Chinese painting
  • Line exercises
  • The way to use ink and Chinese rice/bamboo paper
  • The way to hold the Chinese brush

Week Two – Plum Blossom:

  • Flowers exercises
  • Tree branch exercises

Week Three – Bamboo:

  • Identify the different shades of ink
  • Sear, Soggy and Wet Ink
  • Practise the use of paint brushes

Week Four – Orchid:

  • Identify the different shades of ink
  • Practise the use of paint brushes

Week Five – Lotus and Goldfish:

  • The Chinese paint brush exercises – lotus leaves
  • Understand the relationship between Chinese ink and colour
  • The skills to draw goldfish and understand the beauty of ink
  • Practise different goldfish painting techniques

Weeks Six and Seven – Landscape:

  • Stone exercises
  • Water exercises
  • Trees exercises
  • Mountains exercises
  • Houses exercises

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

Week One:

  • Be open to a new way for painting technique and appreciate the usage of different Chinese pain brushes and Chinese painting colour by doing line practicing during class.

Week Two:

  • Evaluate the structure of flowers. Understand the characteristics of different Chinese paint brushes and when to use them. Explain the meaning of different kinds of flowers in Chinese culture.

Week Three:

  • Discover the beauty of bamboo in Chinese painting and understand the good and bad meaning of bamboo in Chinese culture.

Week Four:

  • Orchid is regarded as the most traditional and difficult flowers to paint in Chinese painting. Discover the beauty of Orchid in Chinese painting and demonstrate the balance between black and white in Chinese painting.

Week Five:

  • Develop skills to draw large leaves, goldfish and water. Also explore the reason why lotus and goldfish are so important in Chinese painting.

Weeks Six and Seven:

  • Introduce the basic history of landscape painting and explore the reason why landscape painting plays such an important role in Chinese painting. This week mainly focuses on the philosophy and literature related to natural landscape.
