Fascinating Faces - Portrait Drawing

Human faces are so intriguing and make fantastic subjects for the creative mind.

Everyone can learn to draw better faces with the right kind of knowledge. You will also discover some curious and amazing facts about our heads that you never knew. A different portrait model will pose for you each week. Your tutor will cater to all skill levels, giving students new ways to draw the face, demonstrating basic approaches for beginners and offering stimulating excercises for those with some experience.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Understand the geometric equivalents of the head, neck and shoulders
  • Gain anatomical knowledge of the cranial masses and their influence on the appearance of head and face
  • Discover the common characteristics of the features and how to observe them in all faces
  • Experiment with various mediums such as pastels and techniques and learn how to choose when to apply them
  • Monochromatic colour and Colour Temperature
  • Learn how to set up a model to take best advantage of their expression and unique presence
  • Apply drama and mood to faces by dramatic and theatrical use of lighting to reflect an "inner psychological portrait"
  • Explore style and expression through the work of past and contemporary artists' work

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Be equipped with the knowledge and understanding of the various systems of analysis, which will allow them to approach with confidence, the drawing of any portrait

Materials List

Please bring:

  • Large sketch paper
  • Willow charcoal
  • Compressed charcoal
  • Hard gum rubber and kneadable eraser
  • Two bulldog clips
  • Small sketch book
  • Six coloured pastels including white
  • Graphite wedge and graphite pencil
  • Rags and sponges
  • Charcoal pencil in brown and black
  • Pastel pencil in dark brown, skin tone and rust

Students are eligible for a 10% discount at Tillys Art Supplies, Darling St, Rozelle. Newtown Art Supplies, King St, Newtown (just show copy of course enrolment confirmation).
