Develop drawing skills and explore your own expressive ideas as you learn about composition, line, tone, perspective, texture and proportion with a variety of subject matter.

If you want to learn about drawing in Sydney, then this course is for you. Includes two sessions of life drawing.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Week 1 – Introduction, Orientation, Materials. Eggs and shoes – line and texture.
  • Week 2 – Drawing from the right hand side of the brain – blind contour, sighted contour, gesture / continuous line. One – word gesture drawings.
  • Week 3 – Still Life – Shape, tone, composition. Band of 8 tones.
  • Week 4 – Composition – negative space, perspective – furniture and architecture
  • Week 5 – Landscape – trees and water, fore, mid and back grounds.
  • Week 6 – The Portrait / Self Portrait – proportion, planes, volume, tone/ shading, continuous line, gesture.
  • Week 7 – Life Drawing – Contour, volume, proportion, light and shade. The figure with relation to its ground.
  • Week 8 – Life Drawing – Free drawing

There will be exercises, demonstrations and discussions throughout the course aided by handouts and art books to illustrate techniques and concepts. Students will also receive individual attention as much as possible.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will have:

  • An understanding of the fundamentals of drawing
  • Knowledge of materials and techniques
  • Developed their hand eye co-ordination
  • Learnt perspective, tone and shading and how to create depth
  • An understanding of composition and picture making
  • Learnt to create harmony and contrast in your pictures
  • An understanding of form and structure in order to simplify the drawing
  • Covered a wide range of subjects including still life and the human figure
  • Insights into how artists see and interpret their surroundings
  • Experienced the fundamentals of Life Drawing

Other Information

Students please bring to class:

  • Several thick Willow charcoal and one Compressed charcoal – square profile
  • Graphite pencils – 4b & 6b
  • Ordinary pencils – 2b & 4b
  • Eraser soft white rubber & Kneadable rubber if available
  • Paper : A2 cartridge / bond paper pad
  • Conte crayon/ soft pastels – red, brown and white
  • Fixative spray (optional – check with tutor before purchasing)
  • Individual Tutors may require an additional item or two and will inform you of those items in the first week

Don’t be too concerned if you do not have all of the above. The most important is the stick of charcoal and some paper.

Please wear closed in shoes.
