Creative Writing Kickstart

Short of time? Interested in fiction but unsure if youre ready to commit to a weekly workshop? Perhaps you’re seeking a creative writing kickstart! Join multitalented writer Catherine Fargher for an exploration of writing poetry, prose, writing for performance or radio, and writing from autobiographical material. Learn how to tap into your creative self through relaxation exercises and amusing your ‘muse’. This course will provide you with many opportunities to play with writing style and content, and the structure can respond to the key interests of participants.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
- Techniques for writing with a relaxed and creative mind, using music, imagery and relaxation techniques as well as journal writing and walking!
- Poetry basics: haiku, acrostic, word association, cut-ups and simple poetry forms
- Writing basic character dialogue and monologues for radio or performance
- Circle and object storytelling
- Writing from your own life and memories
- Narrative writing basics: Voice, third and first person, narrative structure, pace, genres
- Basics of feedback and editing for your own, and others’ work.
Objectives
By the end of the course the student will have:
- Learnt practical exercises to kickstart their own writing practice
- Written a selection of short works including poetry, prose and writing for performance or radio
- Developed confidence in writing from a relaxed and intuitive space
- Learnt about techniques to continue this at home, including journal writing, practical exercises, creative stimuli and relaxation exercises.
Other Information
Please bring an exercise book or journal and pen, and an object, photograph, article, piece of writing or newspaper clipping that holds some inspiraton for you.
Leichhardt Campus, Sydney Secondary College (formerly Leichhardt High School) is located on the corner of Balmain Road and Moore Street West. Entry via Derbyshire Street. Onsite parking very limited, some street parking available.
