This certificate is recognised as an accreditation of competence in English throughout Australia. CSWE II is the Elementary level course. It is likely to take up to 12 months to master all the elements of the course.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that some of the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
- Demonstrating an understanding of a spoken information text
- Participating in a short casual conversation on general topics
- Negotiating a spoken transaction for goods/services
- Reading a procedural text
- Completing a formatted text
- Writing a recount
- Demonstrating a capacity for independent learning
- Using a range of resources for learning English
- Responding to spoken instructions
- Participating in a spoken transaction to obtain information
- Leaving a telephone message
- Participating in a short conversational discussion; participating in a short conversation involving a recount; participating in a short interaction involving explanation
- Reading an informal letter; reading a narrative; reading a short information text
- Writing a short information report; writing a formal letter involving explanation; writing a short opinion text
- Demonstrating an understanding of and perform arithmetical operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and percentages
- Demonstrating an understanding of mathematical terms used to describe shapes
- Demonstrating an understanding of the measurement of time
- Using common measurement instruments and units to measure temperature, length, mass and volume
- Demonstrating an understanding of the mapping of space
- Reading simple tables, graphs, charts and diagrams
Objectives
By the end of the course the student will have:
- Become more confident communicating in English.
- Practised talking and listening.
- Developed skill in reading and understanding information.
- Practised various writing tasks.

ENROLMENT and ASSESSMENT
Student initial interviews/placements dates:
- Monday 13th October at Cleveland Street 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Bring a pen, notebook and folder to class.
According to licensing arrangements, non-permanent residents will be awarded a statement of attendance and permanent residents will be awarded a statement of attainment.
Classes run over two days every week to make up 16 sessions of three hours each.
Each course may take up to twelve months to complete (over four terms) as in each term, only two Learning Outcomes are covered. It is advised to enrol in more than one term of the course so that you receive a certificate in the course rather than just an attendance certificate.
