French Level 2

If you want to learn French in Sydney then this course is for you.

If you thought French was just the language of romance and berets, you were mistaken. French is much more than simply food, wine and the Eiffel Tower, so start to understand the wealth of cultural heritage by learning the language. There are 30 countries where French has official or semi-official status!

This is a second level foundation course. Minimum of 16 hours of prior learning are assumed. After completion of this level (or of 32 hours of equivalent tuition elsewhere) your language skills enable you to progress to a Level 3 course.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that most of the following topics will be covered, however not necessarily in the order given. The classes will be with focus on communicative skills and only basic grammar will be discussed. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Greetings and describing yourself and others. Professions, finding out more about somebody.
  • Shopping – basic questions like ‘how much does something cost?’, basic vocabulary, colours, quantities, complaints.
  • Directions. Interrogatives: Accommodation, getting to places, booking a room.
  • Likes/dislikes. Hobbies, activities. Negatives. Agreeing/disagreeing. Personal opinions.
  • Social Life. Daily activities/routines. Family and friends.
  • Grammar practice. Pronouns, possessives, demonstratives. Present and past time relations. Singular and plural.
  • Practice. Dialogues in formal and informal context. – role plays. Strategies for language learning. Reading text.

Note:

  • In each session there will be great emphasis given to pronunciation (in groups and pairs), which will enhance one’s fluency for communicating in the language.
  • Additional materials may be used in the classroom (music, video, etc.) where available and where suitable for the needs of the class.

Objectives

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

  • Identify and read confidently the writing (alphabet, script, characters)
  • Talk about one’s self, a friend, things and events
  • Converse using negatives and questions
  • Exchange information in a variety of familiar situations
  • Have better fluency in conversation
  • Have a more extensive vocabulary content
  • Gain better learning skills and strategies for language acquisition
  • Improve understanding of the language
  • Have a better knowledge of the country, its culture and customs
