Do you want to know where to purchase the best Greek dips, ricotta, haloumi and goat cheese, olives and salted cod? Delicious melomakarona and kourambiethes Greek cookies? Lebanese spices, nuts and dried fruit shop? Luscious ice cream and sorbets? Curious about Tibetan culture, Buddhist philosophy and meditation? Mystified about exotic and rare Asian herbs from Vietnam and Thailand? Then, come along and discover fascinating Marrickville and its diverse cultures and fabulous foods. The tour includes a yum cha lunch and handouts and food sampling along the way.

Agenda

Marrickville has always been well known for its Greek shops, delis and restaurants just like Haberfield and Leichhardt are famous for Italian culture and food, and Petersham for its fantastic Portuguese food. But what sets Marrickville apart, from Leichhardt and Petersham in the Inner West, is its diverse ethnicity and fabulous foods; the arrival of Vietnamese grocery shops and restaurants, Chinese restaurants and a Tibetan emporium, several years ago. During the tour, we explore the best of Marrickville by visiting Greek shops, including delis and a gelato and sorbet factory, a Vietnamese grocery shop, a spice and nut shop and a unique Tibetan Emporium.

Objectives

At the end of the tour, you will appreciate the uniqueness of Marrickville in terms of its diverse ethnicity that is, its food, culture and its people. You will have discovered where to buy the best feta cheese, haloumi cheese, a great variety of olives, olive oils, spices and nuts, Greek pastries and cookies, Asian herbs and spices, sorbet and gelato and Chinese bbq pork and duck, Tibetan books on Buddhism and meditation and come to know a great yum cha venue and a host of Greek and Vietnamese restaurants.

Other Information

Please meet downstairs, at the front of T.I.M. Products, 407 Enmore Road, Marrickville (diagonally opposite Victoria Road) promptly at 11.15 am. Bus number 426 from Central Station George St will take you to TIM Products.

You can reach the tutor, Swee-Eng, on mobile 0401 081208 if you have any problems getting there on that day.

Please wear good walking shoes, bring along a shopping bag for purchased goods and an esky for frozen foods, if you wish.

Note: Students will have to drive from TIMs at Enmore Road to Central Marrickville, where walking tour begins. Please inform tutor if you need transport for this sector.
