Organic/Eco Gardening

Learn the techniques of organic growing and acquire simple practical ideas that can be put to use immediately. Whether you have a large backyard or inner city balcony, discover the rewards of creating a vibrant healthy garden by working with nature. There will be practical lessons held at community gardens on Saturdays.

If you want to learn how to grow an Organic and Eco friendly garden in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

Session One (Theory) – What is Organic Gardening?/Design Environmental issues – why? (Leichhardt Campus – Monday)

  • Historical perspective of organics
  • Outline of course content
  • Build group dynamics
  • Site analysis, concept and maintenance (covering conserving water, irrigation, mulching, using recycled products)
  • Explore styles

Session Two (Practical) – Understanding Soils/Soil Improvement Methods/Plants (Randwick Community Organic Garden – Saturday)

  • Soil improvement, composting, worm farms, fertilising using natural methods
  • Demonstration of building a worm farm and compost
  • Constructing a no-dig garden
  • Identifying plants
  • Garden maintenance
  • Seed saving and raising, cuttings, division, sourcing plants

Session Three (Theory) – Pest & Disease Management/Plants/Revision (Leichhardt Campus – Monday)

  • Basic botany, exploring plant characteristics, plant selection
  • Pest and disease identification using Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Recognise and describe the garden design process whilst acknowledging the advantages of gardening organically
  • Identify and evaluate the requirements of healthy soil and discuss how water can be conserved in a garden
  • Explain why adequate plant selection is important to a successful organic garden
  • Understand the principles and strategies of natural pest control

Leichhardt Campus, Sydney Secondary College (formerly Leichhardt High School) is located on the corner of Balmain Road and Moore Street West. Pedestrian entrance is on Balmain Rd near Annesley St intersection. Limited parking is available in the school car park, which is accessible from Derbyshire Rd (west of Balmain Rd). Drivers can also park in Annesley St or Hill St (east of Balmain Rd).

Randwick Community Organic Garden is located at Paine Reserve, corner Rainbow & Botany Street Kingsford
