Basic DIY Skills

If you want to learn Basic DIY Skills in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Become familiar with basic DIY home maintenance using a variety of hand and power tools. Choose from a list of options:

  • Hang your own pictures
  • Shelving
  • Sand floorboards or furniture
  • Learn the basics of patching up holes and cracks in plaster
  • Installing window or door locks.

Limited to 10 students.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

Introduction:

  • Course Outline, outcomes, safety/safety gear, risk assessment, discussion of scope and choice of options.

Safety:

  • Introduction to PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and its use
  • Analysis of Job for Safety, and the Safe use of all tools
  • Introduction to ‘MCA’ method of determining the correct fastening system to use, the correct Drill, and Drill Bit

Drilling:

  • Using a Hammer Drill & Drill/ Driver including the Clutch mechanism
  • Drilling into a variety of masonry, tiles, timber, plasterboard and fibro cement
  • Choosing the Correct Drill Bit
  • Hanging Pictures, Installing shelving, Curtain Brackets

Sanding:

  • Use various Sanders safely.
  • Lead Awareness in paints
  • Understand what the numbers on the sandpaper mean.
  • Choose the correct Sanding Papers for the job.
  • Different methods of sanding using different types of Sanders
  • Alternative methods to Sanding (of removing paint).

Fillers and Adhesives:

  • Filling and Stopping cracks and holes in masonry, fibro cement, plasterboard walls, and furniture
  • Mixing a variety of plaster powders and applying
  • Using putty, builder’s bog, Acrylic Gap Filler, Silicone products, some old and tried methods
  • Using a Caulking Gun: for acrylic, silicone and adhesive.
  • Bogging timber and masonry

Painting techniques:

  • Substrate Assessment & Preparation, Priming, Paint choices, Brushes, techniques

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the conclusion of the course this course, participants will have learnt:

  • Safety Risk Assessment: Learning to assess the job for potential risks. Using power tools correctly, safely, with appropriate protection
  • Learning to apply the MCA system to ensure correct choice of tool, fastener, hook, shelf, etc
  • Basic DIY Skills: Hanging pictures and shelving (drilling into masonry/timber/plasterboard)
  • Basic plastering (holes and cracks)
  • Sanding timber and plaster
  • Basic preparation, priming and painting around the home.

Other Information

Things to wear: enclosed leather shoes.
If you have any of the following: safety glasses, ear plugs or muffs, mask. For $12 students can purchase 2 sets of ear plugs, safety glasses and masks (all rated to Australian Standards).
It is not necessary to purchase any tools for the course.

Leichhardt Campus, Sydney Secondary College (formerly Leichhardt High School) is located on the corner of Balmain Road and Moore Street West. Entry via Derbyshire Street. Onsite parking very limited, some street parking available.
