Introduction to Graphology - the Psychology of Handwriting


As far back as the Romans people felt they could deduce something of a person’s character from his handwriting. But only in the 17th Century did serious study being in Italy, followed by France, Germany and Switzerland. As a branch of Gestalt Psychology this subject is taken seriously in Europe where it is taught at a university level. This course aims to separate fact from fiction so that the student knows what is a party trick and what has validity. By the end of the course you will know whether you have a real aptitude for this intriguing and personally fulfilling subject.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, not necessarily in the following order:

  • A definition and short history of graphology.
  • Its context in psychology.
  • Applications of graphology.
  • A history of the alphabet and writing systems in general.
  • Understanding letters as symbols and relating these symbols to our world view.
  • Copybook and Copperplate and their place in handwriting development.
  • How and why handwriting deviates from the norm; the physical mechanism of writing, the expressive aspect of movement.
  • The Roman-Staemphli psychogram – its use as a data sheet and overview of the human psyche.
  • The forty factors on the psychogram and their meanings.
  • Development of the capacity to isolate aspects of a handwriting analysis through class work.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows:

By the end of the course the student will:

  • Understand the history and background of graphology as a specific area of psychology.
  • Understand the broad history of the development of the alphabet and other writing systems.
  • Have a knowledge of basic principles of graphology; how it works, the physical/mental mechanisms of writing.
  • Be familiar with the R-S Psychogram’s 40 factors as they relate to specific samples of handwriting.
  • Have developed skills in analysing handwriting by studying samples in an active way.
