Sport Psychology
If you want to learn about Sport Psychology in Sydney, then this course of 2 weekend classes is for you.
The field of Sport Psychology is primarily concerned with the study of psychological factors and skills that impact on performance which include personality, motivation, confidence, attention, anxiety and arousal, performance enhancement strategies, and group dynamics. Sport Psychology is used to improve workplace performance, assist elite athletes and sport participants, and aid other professional performers including musicians, actors, and dancers. This course will provide an introduction to the areas of Sport Psychology and will provide participants with hands-on skills for improving ones own performance in a variety of areas.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
Session 1:
Introduction to Sport Psychology;
- History & scientific basis of sport psychology.
- Applications to performance domains.
Understanding motivation, concentration and attention
- Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; achievement motivation; strategies for increasing motivation; goal setting in sport and performance; causal attribution theory.
- Selective attention; types of attentional styles; measuring attentional focus; attaining ideal attentional levels for performance.
Session 2:
- Arousal & Anxiety: Anxiety, arousal, and stress relationships; neurophysiology of arousal & anxiety; measurement techniques; arousal regulation techniques.
- Cognitive-Behavioural Intervention Strategies for Peak Performance: Applied sport psychology strategies for attaining peak performance, including imagery, thought stopping, self talk techniques, relaxation strategies, psyching up techniques, and goal setting for peak performance.
Objectives
The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- understand the major theoretical and applied principles of sport psychology;
- relate psychological principles to sport and exercise participation and performance in a variety of areas;
- be familiar with some of the mental training strategies which performers might use in an attempt to improve their functioning.
