This course is designed to get you started in the mysterious but rewarding world of cryptic crosswords. We will explore the various types of clues and arm you with tips and strategies to identify and solve them.
If you want to learn how to solve Cryptic Crosswords in Sydney, then this course is for you.
Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
- Use of reference books
- Clue types including anagrams, hidden words, double definitions, word building, homophones and purely cryptic
- Use of abbreviations
- Thematic crosswords
- Types of crosswords available
- Ways to approach solving cryptic crosswords
Objectives
The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
By the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Solve a number of set cryptic crossword clues
- Understand how clues work
- Have enough understanding and knowledge to continually improve over time

Please bring paper, pen, pencil and dictionary. Also any crosswords you have attempted or would like to try.
