Dragon Boat Racing

If you are interested in Dragon Boat racing in Sydney then this course is for you.

Combining athleticism with ancient traditions, dragon boat racing is a great way to get fit while working in a friendly, team environment. Led by the 2006 National Champions, these introductory sessions will teach you the basics of the sport as you paddle around scenic Blackwattle bay and surrounding areas. Discover why dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia.

Dragon boating originated out of the turmoil of China in the 4th century BC. Qu Yuan, a poet and statesman, threw himself into the river in protest against corruption. Fisherman raced in their boats to save him but all was in vain. To commemorate this event, boats adorned in decorative dragon heads and tails raced in his honour.

From its beginnings as a traditional Chinese festival, dragon boat racing has become one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Dragon boat racing started in Sydney in 1984. There are now over 30 clubs paddling within the Sydney area. The Mavericks Dragon Boating club, who will be running the Community College course, have been in operation for 15 years. We are one of the leading clubs within Australia, having finished 5th at the 2005 National Championships.
