Ever looked at our local waterways (now they are cleaner) and thought that it would be good to be able to take the kids fishing! This course is designed for adults and will look at everything from fish behavioural traits, their environment and the equipment/skills needed to catch them. For beginners or those with some experience. All equipment supplied but BYO if you wish. Each week discover a different local spot – Sydney Harbour/Parramatta River. Who knows, you might be providing dinner!
Times of course will vary depending on tides.

Agenda
During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.
Week One:
- Bait, knots and rigs
- Casting technique
- Catch and release
- Cleaning, gilling, scaling and filleting
Subsequent Weeks:
- Where, when, why and how
- Reading tides and weather conditions
- Bag limits, what you can and cant do
Objectives
The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.
By the end of the course the student will:
- Have the ability to cast accurately and safely into the fish target zone
- Have knowledge of different species physical and behavioural traits
- Have the ability to identify the correct fishing environment for target species
- Be able to prepare equipment and tackle
- Be able to identify choice bait for target species and how to apply
- Have the benefits and techniques of catch and release procedures
- Be able to identify the ideal tides and weather conditions and hazards that can occur
- Have sound knowledge of the legalities involving bag limits, closed seasons and protected species
- Have the ability to clean and prepare a catch for consumption
Other Information
Please buy a recreational fishing licence before the class from a fishing tackle store or selected service stations. Each registration covers one adult (any age) and one child (from 3 years old). The costs of a recreational fishing license start at $6 for 3 days, $12 for a month, $30 for 1 year and $75 for 3 years.
Cost of bait not included in course fee. Cost is $10 per person.
First session meet at Iron Cove Bay at Birkenhead Point Wharf (off Cary Street, Birkenhead Point).
Subsequent sessions will be held at Hen and Chicken Bay, Five Dock, Rozelle Bay, Glebe Park and Pier One. Locations depend on tidal flows and will be confirmed in the first week.
All participants will need a recreational fishing licence.
Participants should bring:
- A recreational fishing licence. These can be purchased from most fishing tackle stores and selected service stations for between $6 for one day to $75 for 3 years. We advise that students purchase a 1 year licence for $30.
- A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
- Suitable footwear no thongs or sandals
- Snack/drinks
- A camera to take photos of your catch!
All fishing equipment will be supplied but students can bring their own if they wish.
