Away With the Birds

If you want to learn about Bird Watching in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Birds are beautiful and they inspire us. You don’t need to know a lot about birds to enjoy watching them. Come for a ramble and find birds in surprising places. These workshops will help you begin to enjoy watching and listening to birds and learn some skills to help you discover what kind of bird is it? Every bird is different in some way. You are never too old, or young, to start.

Agenda

During this workshop, it is intended to cover the following topics, but due to the flexible nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the planned topics may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • What is a bird? Where do they live?
  • Bird watching equipment
  • Don’t frighten the birds!
  • Our first ramble – a walk where we shall look and listen for birds
  • Using Field Guides and pictures to check what we have seen.
  • Identifying birds – simple guidelines and principles
  • Use your ears
  • Developing a useful kit for watching birds
  • Another ramble – you’ll see more this time
  • Using Field Guides and pictures to check what we have seen.
  • A final ramble to see more birds, apply your new knowledge and gain some final tips.

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

  • Use appropriate techniques to observe birds
  • Use bird watching equipment
  • Use a basic field guide
  • Use a few clues for identifying birds

Other Information

Bird Watching for Beginners location is the Bennelong Pond Education Centre, Bicentennial Park. For detailed instructions on how to get here please see the attached PDF below or click on the venue name to access these instructions.

  • Students will need to wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes and a rain jacket if wet.
  • Bring binoculars if you have them (course will loan additional)
  • A small notebook and pencil
  • Your Field Guide if you have one (course will loan additional)

Bennelong Pond Education Centre, Bicentennial Park. Parking in car park P10F. Enter via Australia Avenue and follow loop road towards the exit at Bennelong Rd. Turn right for parking (P10F). the Bennelong Pond Education Centre located north-west of parking (P10F). Please note that Sydney Olympic Park can be difficult to find your way around. Please allow plenty of time to find the class on the first week.
