Commute by Bike

Commute by bicycle instead of the car. Save time, money and the environment. This course will teach you the skills to ride on the road confidently. You will learn how to choose safe roads to commute to work, to shop or to visit friends and family. You will learn how to do a quick maintenance check and to change a puncture. On day two, participate in a 12km road ride with coffee stop.

If you want to learn how to Commute by Bike in Sydney, then this course is for you. Students must have some cycling experience.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

Day One:

  • How to check your bike
  • Know the road rules
  • Identify road hazards
  • Correct braking precision & emergency
  • Manoeuvring and tight turns
  • Riding through narrow entrances
  • Riding with one hand
  • Short 5km road ride

Day Two:

  • Identify safe routes
  • Gearing & correct pedal speed
  • Fix a puncture
  • 12km road ride with coffee stop
  • Correct hill climbing technique
  • Information re cycle groups & activities
  • How to maintain your bike

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows.

By the end of the course the student will:

  • Be able to choose a safe and appropriate cycle route using a street directory and information from the course
  • Be able to check that the bike is safe and be able to do basic maintenance on the bike
  • Be able to identify road hazards
  • Have the skills to ride on the road safely
  • Know how to join an appropriate cycle group for support and more learning

Students need to bring the following:

  • A completed Physical Activity Readiness questionnaire (PAR-Q) see note below
  • A roadworthy bicycle with gears
  • Helmet
  • Sports shoes or cycling shoes not sandals or thongs
  • Water bottle and water bottle holder on the bike
  • Street directory with highlighter (Session 2)
  • Any cycle tools or puncture repair kit that you may have
  • Pump (if owned)

This course will be held at Sydney Park, St Peters. Corner Sydney Park Rd and Mitchell Rd. CARES Centre, Sydney Park, St Peter’s. If driving or riding enter the car park opposite the Sydney Park Rd/Mitchell St intersection. Walk or ride your bike through to the mini traffic course and onto the shaded cloth area next to the CARES brick building. We will start in the seated area next to the building.

Students will be advised on what tools and puncture repair equipment they will need to buy if they start cycling regularly.

For all courses involving physical activity you must arrive by the published course commencement time or the tutor may refuse to admit you into the session. The agenda for many courses involving physical activity starts with an OH&S briefing and/or a warm up and to miss either may create a hazard to you which might exclude you from participation for the session.
