Shoe Boxes and the Art of Photography

Why is Leading Teacher in Photography at Sydney Community College, Lisa Zanderigo, concerned about shoe boxes?

‘People used to take their photographs using rolls of film and the prints stacked up in some shoe box rarely to see the light of day’, she says. ‘In the digital age, the new shoe box is the computer’.

‘Today because we can afford to take more photos and they don’t take up physical space, it is not long before we have thousands collected on the computer also rarely seeing the light of day’, says Lisa.

Lisa is responsible for the newly restructured photography courses offered by the College. As well as delivering uniform and up-to-date courses that work for both film and digital, Lisa wants to ensure that photography remains the prominent documenter of our times.

‘Photography is the snapshot of our lives. We all experience great pleasure when we thumb through family photo albums and we need to leave the same gift to coming generations’ according to Lisa.

‘As well as the basic skills showing how to use a camera and the creative aspects of learning how to take better pictures, we emphasise the need to set up digital filing systems so they are sorted as you go and you know where to find images before it is too late’.

‘New technology using the web, photo sharing sites and snapfish offer wonderful opportunities for creative outlet as well as sharing and recording your images with others’, says Lisa.

For those who think photography in the new age is beyond them Lisa says, ‘Sometimes it’s a more complicated dance but you just need to learn the steps’. For more information on the courses go to www.course.com.au/courses/arts/photography.
