Which Camera, Which Course?

Sydney Community College’s Photography Program is designed primarily for SLR Cameras (Film and Digital) rather than Compact Cameras (Manual or Automatic).

For Compact Camera users, there are only two courses offered – “Compact Camera Basics“ and “Compact Camera Advanced”. You can’t do any of the higher level technical and speciality courses with a Compact Camera.

Compact Cameras (Manual or Automatic) – Some of these can almost look like an SLR but, if you are unable to physically remove the lens from the body, it isn’t an SLR. Compact Cameras also have smaller sensors which you can’t see because you can’t remove the lens. Some Compact Cameras have no viewfinder.

SLR Cameras (Film or Digital) – The most obvious defining feature of SLR’s is that you can take the lenses off and replace them with a wide range of other lenses. They have a viewfinder and larger sensors which you can see by removing the lens.
