I am passionate about photography and have been teaching a range of courses for 16 years in order to pass on this passion and the skills I have learned throughout my career. My students – and there have been thousands of them – regularly say how inspiring they have found my courses; in fact some of them have been inspired to progress to fulltime photography courses at tertiary institutions as a result.
In my teaching I focus on the vision of photography and how to achieve it, with an emphasis on the practical; observing the work of photographers, setting assignments and taking classes on photo shoots so that the theory and techniques dealt with in class are put into practice. The resulting photographs are then discussed, observing aspects such as composition, light and impact.
My photographic career began when I photographed the Dalai Lama in 1982 when I was writing feature articles for magazines. I have continued to pursue my interest in spirituality and travel regularly to India where I have had the great good fortune to spend time with many leading mystics – and photograph them of course! I have also been official photographer for the Dalai Lama on subsequent visits to Australia.
