Experience

Murray van der Veer has been photographing landscapes since he picked up a camera 20-something years ago. He has been a professional photographer for all of his working life – the majority of his commercial work has been in advertising.

To satisfy his personal passion, Murray has been running landscape photography courses with the Australian Centre of Photography and through the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service with Discovery Photographers HYPERLINK www.discoveryphoto.org. Over the last few years, he’s veered into focusing on portraits in landscape, telling the story of people by photographing them in their environment.

Achievements

Murray’s work has been hung in the Citibank Portrait Prize 2005 and 2006, the National Portrait Prize 2007 and the Moran photographic Portrait Prize 2008.

Teaching Style

Murray’s teaching style is very interactive, and very experiential. Although he constantly shares from his experiences, his approach is about drawing out of the student what they already know, and where they want to go.
In his mentoring role, Murray helps students explore how they can take charge of the learning experience to achieve their individual goals. It’s a real workshop experience.

Something Unique

In his workshops, Murray encourages everyone to add their input to what’s going on and to learn from each other. He loves watching students gain the confidence to contribute to each other’s learning. He learns from them too – from a new way to look at the landscape, insights on the weather, to ideas about logistics for shooting off the beaten.
